Events Dedicated to the 35th Anniversary of the Barricades

From January 13, events dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the barricades will take place in Riga and other regions of Latvia, the 1991 Barricades Museum reported.

On Tuesday, January 13, a special envelope "Barricades - 35" issued by "Latvijas pasts" will be canceled at the post office on Elizabetes Street in Riga. The designer of the envelope and stamp is artist Girts Griva.

On January 13 at 18:00, a commemorative event in honor of the defenders of the barricades will take place at Zakusala near the building of Latvian Television, where more than 100 young soldiers will take a solemn oath.

From January 14 to January 27, a photo exhibition titled "We Defended Latvia" will be open at Freedom Square, dedicated to the events of that time - from planning the defense of strategic objects to the demolition of the last barricade. Simultaneously, a digital version of the exhibition with additional photographs will be available on the website of the 1991 Barricades Museum at barikades.lv.

On Friday, January 16, a conference titled "The January Barricades of 1991 as a Manifestation of Popular Resistance to Totalitarian Regimes and Lessons for Today" will be held in the Saeima.

On the same day at 12:00, a commemorative event will take place at the grave of Robert Murnieks, the first casualty of the 1991 barricades, at Marupe Cemetery, and at 16:00, a commemorative event in his honor will be held at the Vecmilgravis Bridge.

On Saturday, January 17, an open house will be held in the Saeima, the Cabinet of Ministers, Latvian Radio, Latvian Television, and the company "Tet" on Dzirnavu Street in honor of the anniversary of the barricades.

On the same day at 17:00, a festive gala concert "Barricades of 1991 - 35" will take place at Dome Square, and on Sunday, January 18, at 15:00, a concert "We Defended Latvia" will be held at the Kipsala Exhibition Hall.

On Tuesday, January 20, a comprehensive program will mark the Day of Remembrance for the Defenders of the Barricades of 1991 in Riga and the regions of Latvia.

At 9:55, church bells will ring across Latvia, and schools will hold a lesson titled "The Barricades of 1991 - Latvia's Struggle for Freedom, Democracy, and Independence."

In turn, Latvian Television will offer an extensive program of broadcasts dedicated to the events of 1991 and the anniversary of the barricades.
