Russia, the U.S., and China are interested in a divided Europe. This was stated by the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, who was quoted by Politico on Sunday, May 17.

"Why do these powers want to destroy the European Union? Because together we are much stronger," she pointed out at the Lennart Meri Conference in Tallinn. "They do not like the European Union, that is quite clear," Kallas added.

"But we must understand why they do not like the EU; why China does not like the EU, why Russia does not like it. It is because if we stick together, if we act together, we are equal forces, we are strong," emphasized the EU's High Representative.

Kallas noted that it is "of course easier" to deal with individual countries that are much smaller than with a bloc that can act as an equal force. According to her, the rhetoric of - "I have great relations with you, but I do not like the European Union" - is part of the U.S. strategy of "divide and conquer."

Kallas urged EU member states not to weaken the bloc

In this context, the head of the EU's foreign policy service, Kaja Kallas, urged member states of the union not to weaken the bloc by entering into bilateral agreements with Washington. "I am very concerned because I sometimes see some countries going down this path. Division really works," Kaja Kallas believes.

Since the beginning of Donald Trump's second term, several EU countries have sought to maintain their own channels of communication with Washington, Politico reminded. For example, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni positioned herself as a potential mediator between Europe and the U.S., until this strategy failed amid Trump's criticism of Pope Leo XIV, the publication noted. Kallas rejected Schröder's candidacy as a negotiator with the Russian Federation.

Earlier, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy rejected Russian President Vladimir Putin's proposal to appoint former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as the EU's representative in peace negotiations with the Russian Federation.

"If we allow Russia to appoint a negotiator on our behalf, it would not be very wise," Kallas stated before a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels on May 11, as quoted by "Deutsche Welle."
