On May 19, 2026, the main character of the "Book of Job" from the Old Testament, the righteous Job the Suffering, is remembered. This saint, as the scripture says, was an example of true faith, the ability to live in accordance with the will of the Lord, righteousness, and patience. In the folk tradition, this day was called Job the Pea-sower, because it marked the beginning of pea sowing.
What is remembered in the Church on May 19, 2026
Job lived approximately 2,000 years before Christ in the northern part of the Arabian Peninsula. He is believed to have been the son of Nahor and the nephew of Abraham. His devotion was appreciated by God Himself, who blessed Job with immense wealth. The Lord granted him a beautiful wife and numerous offspring — he had seven sons and three daughters.
The father strictly monitored the behavior of his children, demanding that they not sin either in actions or even in thought. And they all lived in prosperity and friendship, gathering every day for common meals. The devil envied such a follower of the Lord and began to assert before Him that Job was not steadfast in his faith. Then the Lord handed Job over to Satan, and the Righteous Man immediately lost his possessions, while his children perished under the ruins of the house during a common dinner. But Job did not speak a single word against God.
Then the devil took hold of the saint — he lost his health, being struck by a terrible disease. He withdrew from people and suffered from a dreadful ailment in solitude. But he did not speak a single bad word about the Lord.
His friends convinced Job that suffering is sent only to sinners, while the righteous prosper, hinting at Job's inner faults. Therefore, they accused Job of dishonor and sinfulness, although he tried to deny it. Job suffered terribly and turned to God, asking Him to explain what was happening. But he immediately realized his insignificance before the Creator and began to ask for forgiveness for his inappropriate doubts. And then God restored his health and everything he had lost — both money and family. The saint lived for many more years, praising the Lord.
