All hospitals in Latvia divided into three groups – what distinguishes them 0 16

It is expected that the new division of hospitals and the associated requirements will come into effect on January 1, 2027. What distinguishes hospitals placed in different groups:

In local hospitals, residents will have access to round-the-clock emergency care, patient admissions, diagnostic examinations, therapy, and treatment for chronic patients.

Regional hospitals will additionally provide a wider range of specialized care, including the most in-demand services in surgery, traumatology, obstetrics, and pediatrics.

Multidisciplinary hospitals, in turn, will provide treatment across all major profiles – emergency medicine, therapy, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, as well as other more complex treatment areas that require higher capacity and availability of specialists.

This means that simpler and most in-demand care will be available closer to residents' homes, while in more complex cases, patients will be treated in hospitals with the appropriate experience and resources, the Ministry of Health explains.

The category of multidisciplinary hospitals will include:

– Liepaja Regional Hospital;

– Daugavpils Regional Hospital;

– North Kurzeme Regional Hospital;

– Rezekne Hospital;

– Vidzeme Hospital.

The category of regional hospitals includes:

– Jelgava City Hospital;

– Jekabpils Regional Hospital;

– Jurmala Hospital;

– Kuldiga Hospital;

– Cesis Clinic;

– Madona Hospital;

– Ogre District Hospital.

The local hospitals include:

– Tukums Hospital;

– Kraslava Hospital;

– Balvi and Gulbene Hospital Association;

– Aluksne Hospital;
