Starting today, residents of Riga will have access to a simplified unified local government phone number — 1201, which will ensure prompt communication for both everyday issues and crisis situations, reports LETA, citing the External Communication Department of the Riga City Council.

The number 1201 symbolically coincides with the year Riga was founded.

The short number provides quick, easy-to-remember, and convenient communication. This approach is already used in many major European cities — in Warsaw, the number 19115 operates, in Kyiv there is a developed system of short numbers (1539, 1545, 1547), and in Vilnius, the number 1664 is in use.

The local government emphasizes that short numbers have an important advantage — they are easy to remember, especially in situations where mobile internet is disrupted and it is impossible to quickly find a long number.

Since July 1 of last year, the Riga local government has already centralized its communication system, combining several previous information phone lines into one free number — 80001201. Now this number has also been assigned a short equivalent — 1201, which starts operating at the beginning of the new year. Both numbers can currently be used in parallel.

The unified local government phone provides information about municipal services on weekdays from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, accepts reports of incidents in the urban environment 24/7, and offers the possibility of a callback from an operator.

The phone service is supported by a round-the-clock duty operator and several operators during working hours, attracting additional resources if necessary. This system allows the local government to coordinate information and respond more quickly in crisis situations.

The information phones of Riga's municipal enterprises — "Rīgas satiksme", "Rīgas ūdens", "Rīgas namu pārvaldnieks" — are not yet included in the centralized system.
