Trump suggests he may not help NATO

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that Washington may not come to NATO's aid in the future if asked, criticizing the alliance for its lack of support for the U.S. in the war with Iran, LETA reported citing DPA.

"We would always be there for them, but now, given their actions, I don’t think we have to do that, do we?" Trump said at an event in Miami.

Trump sharply criticized the alliance for not supporting the U.S. in the war with Iran. "I think it was a huge mistake that NATO was just not there," he stated.

Trump noted that the U.S. spends hundreds of billions of dollars each year to secure its allies.

"Why should we be there for them if they are not there for us?" Trump questioned.

The war with Iran has heightened tensions in transatlantic relations. Trump and other U.S. officials have accused NATO allies of inaction.

The U.S. has also criticized allies for not allowing the use of military bases or for doing so too late.
