Thailand began airstrikes on Cambodia on Monday, with both sides accusing each other of attacks, LETA reports citing AP.
Thai army spokesman Major General Winthai Suvari stated that Cambodian troops in several areas fired first into Thai territory. According to him, one Thai soldier was killed, four others were injured, and civilians are being evacuated from the affected areas.
Thailand used aircraft to "strike military targets in several areas to suppress fire in support of Cambodia," he said.
Cambodian Defense Ministry spokeswoman Malia Sochata stated that the Thai armed forces were the first to attack Cambodian soldiers. She noted that during the initial attacks on Monday, Cambodia did not return fire.
"Cambodia calls on Thailand to immediately cease all hostile actions that threaten peace and stability in the region," she said.
In October, Thailand signed a peace agreement with Cambodia.
The goal of the agreement, signed under the auspices of U.S. President Donald Trump, is to achieve long-term peace following the July clashes at the border between Thailand and Cambodia, which resulted in at least 43 deaths. More than 300,000 civilians on both sides of the border were forced to leave their homes.
Disputes over border territories have existed between Thailand and Cambodia for decades; however, the July clashes were triggered by Thailand's claims that Cambodia had placed landmines along the border, resulting in injuries to Thai soldiers.
