Dacha Enjoyment: 9 Vegetables That Require Minimal Care

By planting these vegetables, you can enjoy your time at the dacha without unnecessary hassle.

Radish

Spicy and juicy radish is a decoration for any summer dish, from salad to okroshka. This root vegetable is undemanding and suitable for growing in open ground. For an early harvest, it can be sown in a greenhouse or hotbed, covered with non-woven material. The planting period is late May to early June.

Beetroot

Beetroot can be planted along the edges of a strawberry bed or next to onions, without allocating a separate space for it. It grows well in open ground and does not require greenhouse conditions. The seedlings appear quickly, and it does not need fertilization—ordinary organic matter is sufficient. Watering is infrequent, and it is important to ensure that water does not stagnate.

Onion

Green onion feathers can even be grown on a windowsill. It sprouts as one of the first and helps replenish vitamins after winter. Sets are planted in the bed in mid-May at a distance of 10-15 cm. Watering once a week and periodic loosening of the soil will help achieve a good harvest. At the end of August, the onions are dug up and prepared for storage until the next dacha season.

Peas

Peas and other legumes, such as beans and chickpeas, are undemanding and yield a rich harvest even with minimal care. They can grow in both sun and shade. Seedlings appear in 30-40 days, and watering begins when the plants reach 15 cm. Wooden stakes can serve as supports, placing one for every 4 plants. Beans should not be planted in the same spot for three consecutive years.

Zucchini

Zucchini seeds are soaked in warm water for 4-5 days and then planted in open beds. Watering the seedlings is done every 10 days, and the first fruits can be harvested in about 30 days. It is not advisable to wait for the zucchinis to grow large—small ones are much tastier.

Kohlrabi

Kohlrabi is an excellent choice for lazy gardeners and beginners. This type of cabbage is easier to grow than broccoli or cauliflower. It stores well and can remain fresh all winter. Kohlrabi is planted using seedlings, and if you don't want to deal with sprouts, you can buy ready-made ones at the market. Watering young plants is done as the substrate dries out.

Potatoes

Potatoes are a must-have vegetable in any garden. The first tubers can be dug up in 30-40 days, which is ideal for a short dacha season. Fertilizer is added directly to the hole during planting, and in mid-summer, the bushes are treated with insecticides against Colorado beetles.

Horseradish

Horseradish is propagated by rhizome, simply burying it in the ground. This plant is so undemanding that it should not be pampered; on the contrary, it should be limited. Once planted, it will be difficult to get rid of it—it appears every season with enviable consistency.

Leafy Greens

If leafy greens are planted early in the spring in a greenhouse, the first harvest can be collected by May. Young leaves require no care—just cut them and come back for a new portion of vitamins in a week. The most undemanding are: dill, parsley, cilantro, arugula, and watercress.
