Activision changed the release order of Call of Duty games after the failure of Black Ops 7.
American developer and publisher Activision has revised its game release plans due to the failure of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. This was noted by The Verge.
The shooter was released on November 14, 2025, and became a continuation of the popular Black Ops series. The previous game in the series was released in 2024. Activision took note of the game's unsuccessful launch and stated that it will no longer release new installments of Black Ops or Modern Warfare consecutively.
The last four games in the series were released back-to-back — Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, Black Ops 6, and Black Ops 7. Activision announced that starting in 2026, they will change the release order so that new Modern Warfare and Black Ops games do not come out in consecutive years. According to company representatives, the new order will provide gamers with "an absolutely unique experience every year."
"We will implement significant innovations, not just incremental changes," the company stated. Activision also emphasized that "the future of Call of Duty looks very promising," and the next game in the series "will definitely meet your expectations and deliver several surprises."
The authors of The Verge reported that gamers around the world received Black Ops 7 quite lukewarmly. They also noted that the new game faced tough competition from Battlefield 6.
