The American company OpenAI announced an agreement with the government of Malta, under which all residents of the country will receive access to the ChatGPT Plus service for one year after completing a course on using artificial intelligence (AI).

Malta has become the first country in the world to launch such a national program. The first phase of the initiative called "Artificial Intelligence for All" will start in May, and the Malta Digital Innovation Authority will oversee access to free subscriptions.

"Malta is the first country to launch a partnership of this scale because we are not allowing our citizens to fall behind in the digital age. We are putting our people at the forefront of global change," said the country's Minister of Economy, Entrepreneurship, and Strategic Projects Silvio Schembri.

The minister added that this way Malta will turn "an unfamiliar concept into practical assistance." The program will also be available to Maltese citizens living abroad. OpenAI has not disclosed the financial details of the agreement.

The ChatGPT Plus subscription costs $20 per month. Malta has a population of 574,200 people.
