Revolutionary amendments to the Pharmacy Law have been prepared.
At the next government meeting, the amendments to the Pharmacy Law prepared by the Ministry of Health will be considered and are likely to be approved. The amendments are intended to facilitate and expedite the acquisition of vital medications by pharmacies, primarily stationary ones. Previously, hospital pharmacies, including closed-type stationary pharmacies, could only obtain medications through Latvian wholesale warehouses. The proposed amendments will allow hospital pharmacies, in cases where the required medication is unavailable through Latvian wholesale drug bases, to order it from wholesale bases in other EU countries and the free economic zone (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland). Moreover, pharmacies will also be able to purchase non-registered medications in the EU if their distributors have the appropriate license.
If these amendments come into effect, patients will be able to receive medications that were previously unavailable in Latvia more quickly.
