Lukillian lived in Nicomedia during the time of the Roman Emperor Aurelian. He practiced paganism all his life and was even a priest of this cult. However, in old age, he realized the falsehood of his religion and turned to Christ, after which he was baptized and began to preach. His ill-wishers reported this to the city governor Silvanus.
He tried to force the elder to return to paganism but then sent him to torture, angry at his stubbornness. The beaten elder was then sent to prison, where he met four young confessors of Christ — Claudius, Hypatius, Paul, and Dionysius. They became close and supported each other. Lukillian set an example for them of how to stand firm in their faith. Their helper and witness was a maiden named Paulina, who secretly brought them food in captivity and washed their wounds. The youths and the elder were brought to trial together and sentenced to death.
They were thrown into a heated furnace, but then it rained and extinguished the fire — all five remained unharmed. Then they were sent for execution in Byzantium. Paulina followed them. There, the youths had their heads cut off, and Lukillian met a martyr's death on the cross. Paulina returned to Nicomedia, but there she was captured and also attempted to be burned in the furnace. But the miracle was repeated, and Paulina, like the others, only accepted death when she was brought to Byzantium. There, she was beheaded with a sword.
