As fitness trainer Olga YABLOKOVA comments, the 'office butt' effect is a condition in which the muscles gradually lose tone due to a lack of load.
The gluteal muscles are among the largest and strongest in the body. They are responsible for stabilizing the pelvis, participating in hip extension, and helping to maintain proper movement mechanics during walking, etc.
When a person sits for a long time, these muscles are in a stretched and almost inactive position. If this position becomes permanent, the function of the gluteal muscles gradually deteriorates, the load is redistributed, the lower back starts to work more than it should, and the hamstring muscles take on some of the functions of the glutes. This can lead to discomfort and tension in the lower back, as well as changes in the shape of the buttocks.
The advice is simple: to minimize negative consequences, one should stand up and stretch at least once an hour.
