Modern technology will spoil the appearance of old buildings.

The country is faced with the fact: the climate is changing, and extremely high temperatures in the summer are no longer rare. It would seem that it is time to change habits and adapt daily life, but no.

The French Continue To:

  • refuse to install air conditioners;
  • sleep on the floor;
  • sleep in parks;
  • sleep in wet sheets;
  • sleep on towels from the freezer;
  • rely on fans and bottles of frozen water.

The newspaper Le Parisien published useful tips for its readers on how to properly use a fan.

"To cope with this stifling heat, a fan is an indispensable tool. But it is important to know how to use it effectively. Remember that unlike an air conditioner, a fan cannot cool a home by itself in the heat. However, it creates a stream of air that provides a feeling of coolness by promoting the evaporation of sweat.

During the coolest hours (at night), when the temperature outside is lower than inside, turn on the fan and direct it outside, in front of an open window. This will help expel hot air from the room and replace it with still cool air from outside.

During the day, it is recommended to place damp cloths, icy water, or ice cubes in front of the fan. This helps circulate cooler air and cool the room faster. Attention: cloths or icy water should be placed in front of the fan, not on top, to avoid the risk of electric shock.

To enhance the feeling of coolness, you can directly moisten your skin, for example, with a spray bottle. However, do not take a cold shower, as your body will require a lot of energy to adapt to the significant temperature difference. You risk feeling hot again very quickly."

For greater comfort and to reduce the risk of illness, it is also recommended not to place the fan too close and to set it to oscillate. Ideally, you should even cover yourself with a sheet to prevent direct air contact with your skin. This way, you protect your body from catching a cold and headaches.

Other Useful Tips for Staying Cool at Home.

In addition to using a fan, the French health authority recommends closing blinds, shutters, curtains, and windows during the day unless the house is shaded by a tree or other external protection from the sun. It is important to limit sunlight exposure on glass surfaces, which slows down the penetration of heat into the room, but you can create cross-ventilation if your windows are in the shade. As soon as the temperature outside becomes lower than the temperature inside: widely open the blinds, shutters, and windows to let in fresh air and thereby cool the house.
