The municipal transport company SIA "Rīgas satiksme" announced a market study to create a new payment system in public transport, said the head of the company's public relations department, Baiba Bartashevicha-Feldmane.
A new system is planned to be developed as an open one, so that passengers can use various payment methods - bank cards, mobile devices, QR codes, and other solutions.
It is expected that the new system will make payments possible without prior ticket purchase - it will account for trips and apply the most advantageous fare to the passenger. At the same time, the system will allow for more flexible tariff formation and faster implementation of new solutions, the company hopes.
According to Baiba Bartashevicha-Feldmane, the existing system is outdated and cannot be aligned with modern payment capabilities, including bank cards. Furthermore, the company currently operates several unrelated ticket systems that are technologically outdated and cannot develop.
One of the procurement requirements is integration with existing e-tickets, so they can still be used for trip registration in the future. "This is especially important for elderly people and passengers with disabilities - if they do not want to change their habits, no additional steps will be required from their side," said Bartashevicha-Feldmane.
