A heavy snowfall is expected on the first day of the year

On the first day of the year, heavy snowfall is expected in the western and central regions of Latvia, predicts the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LEGMC), writes LETA.

On Thursday morning, the sky will be covered with clouds, but in some eastern areas, rays of sunshine will break through. From midday, a vast area of precipitation will cross Latvia from the west — heavy snowfall is expected in the western and central regions, with snow cover increasing by 5–8 centimeters in some places.

In the evening, in some coastal areas, the snow will turn into wet snow, and in certain places, ice may form.

On certain sections of the roads, it will be slippery, and during the snowfall, visibility may deteriorate to 1–2 kilometers in some areas.

A moderate southern wind will blow, which will gradually shift to the southeast. On the coast, wind gusts will reach 15–19 meters per second, and in the second half of the day, gusts of up to 15 meters per second are possible in the inland areas of the west and center of the country.

The air temperature will rise to -3…-8 degrees, but in the westernmost areas, it will warm up to -2…+3 degrees.

In Riga, the day will be overcast. Light snow is expected in the morning, and in the evening, the area of precipitation from the west will reach the capital, with snow cover increasing by 2–4 centimeters. A moderate southern and southeastern wind will prevail, with gusts up to 15–17 meters per second. The air temperature will range from -4 to -5 degrees.
