Soon, Ukrainian citizens will be able to use their SIM cards in the EU without any extra charges, under their home tariffs.
Starting from January 1, Ukraine will join the European-wide roaming rules that operate in the EU under the principle of "roaming like at home." This means that additional charges for mobile communication and Internet while traveling across Europe, including Latvia, will not be applied to Ukrainian citizens. The same rules apply to residents of Latvia when they travel to other EU countries.
Ukrainian citizens traveling in EU countries or temporarily residing there will be able to use their Ukrainian tariffs without extra charges – making calls, sending messages, and accessing the Internet under the same conditions as at home. Similar rules will also apply to EU citizens who are in Ukraine.
In Germany, the implementation of these innovations has already begun. The operator Vodafone was the first to announce this, specifying that it will switch to the new rules on December 16. Deutsche Telekom and O2 plan to launch them on January 1 or immediately after the regulation comes into effect. Thus, Germany will become one of the first countries where Ukrainians can practically benefit from the new rules.
It is important to note that the agreement only concerns Ukrainian telecommunications operators, and these rules do not apply to the territories of Ukraine occupied by Russia. Along with Ukraine, Moldova is also connecting to the new roaming format as it moves towards the European Union.
