In the event of an attack, the NATO Secretary General will not have to wait for all NATO ambassadors to express their views before responding - forces will be deployed immediately, said former NATO Military Committee Chairman Rob Bauer in an interview with LETA on the sidelines of the Riga Conference.
Bauer emphasized that the peoples of Latvia and the Baltics are not alone, as they are backed by the North Atlantic Alliance.
"This is my message. Stop listening to all this nonsense and trust your own, trust the Latvian government and Latvian authorities. Do not listen to what Russia says, trust your allies," Bauer emphasized.
As an example, he cited the incident with Russian drones in Poland. In response to this incident, several Western aircraft were deployed, so NATO helped and responded.
He advises not to listen to people who ask every day whether Article 5 of the NATO Treaty will really work.
"We know very well who wants to maintain this rhetoric, who wants people to discuss it over and over again - it is Russia. Do you really believe that they will come to the aid of a small country located so far from the Netherlands? Who cares about that at all? Well, the Dutch armed forces do not care. People in Brussels do not care. NATO headquarters does not care, and the Supreme Allied Commander ensures your security," Bauer stated.
Bauer also called the assertion that everything should be discussed in the North Atlantic Council unfounded.
