Over the weekend, law enforcement managed to detain a transport operator of illegal migrants from France who was fleeing from the police, the State Border Guard reported.
On Sunday, in the Laucesa parish of the Augšdaugava region, the police attempted to stop a "Toyota" car for inspection, but the driver did not stop. The police began a chase, during which the car drove onto a meadow.
The driver and passengers of the car fled on foot. The police ordered the driver to stop, but he did not comply with the demand and continued to flee, prompting the police to fire a warning shot into the air.
After that, the driver of the vehicle - a citizen of France - was detained at the scene. With the assistance of a border guard and a service dog, six individuals without valid travel documents, who had previously illegally crossed the Belarusian-Latvian border, were also found.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, on the Malta-Rezekne highway, the police attempted to stop a "Volkswagen" car for inspection, but the driver did not respond to the police's lawful request to stop the vehicle.
The police began a chase, resulting in the car being found in a ditch in the Luznava parish. The driver and passengers escaped.
The border guards immediately began search operations, resulting in the discovery of six individuals without valid travel documents, who had previously illegally crossed the Belarusian-Latvian border.
Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the transporters.
Twelve individuals were returned to the border with Belarus.
