Blueberry leaf tea improves sleep quality in cases of sleep disorders.

Japanese scientists have discovered that blueberry leaf tea can significantly improve sleep quality in people with sleep disorders. A clinical study showed that regular consumption of this drink helps reduce the number of nighttime awakenings and makes sleep more continuous within just two weeks. The work was published in Nutrients.

In a double-blind placebo-controlled experiment, 50 adults aged 20 to 69 who complained of poor sleep participated. Participants drank either fermented blueberry leaf tea, rich in the flavonoid hyperoside, or a placebo drink three times a day. Sleep quality was assessed using wearable activity trackers that recorded objective sleep parameters.

The results showed that participants consuming blueberry tea experienced increased sleep efficiency and reduced wakefulness after falling asleep. The greatest effect was observed in individuals with the most pronounced sleep disturbances at the beginning of the study. No significant changes in total sleep duration or sleep onset latency were found.

The authors note that the improvements specifically pertained to the "continuity" of sleep — one of the key indicators of sleep quality. It is suggested that the effect is related to the action of hyperoside, which may influence the serotonin and melatonin systems involved in sleep regulation. The researchers emphasize that the tea was well tolerated and did not cause side effects.

According to the scientists, blueberry leaf tea can be considered a safe functional product for people with fragmented sleep, especially against the backdrop of growing interest in non-pharmacological ways to improve sleep.
