A study published in the journal Food & Function (F&F) has shown that regular consumption of whole grains helps maintain higher cognitive activity and a lower risk of age-related memory decline in middle-aged and older adults. The analysis involved more than 5,000 participants with an average age of 64, whose data were compared by researchers from Chongqing and Beijing with the results of tests on attention, memory, and processing speed.

It turned out that participants who consumed more whole grains (about 75 grams per day) performed better on all cognitive tests and were 18 percent less likely to experience mild cognitive impairment. The connection between whole grain consumption and improvements in verbal memory and attention span was particularly pronounced.

Scientists explain the effect by the high content of fiber, B vitamins, magnesium, and antioxidants in grains, which contribute to vascular health and neuron protection. The authors emphasize that even a small increase in the proportion of whole grains in the diet can be a simple way to support memory and mental clarity in old age.
