Legendary England goalkeeper Peter Shilton stated that he no longer holds a grudge against Diego Maradona for the hand goal in the quarterfinals of the 1986 World Cup.
Shilton's comments are reported by The Sun.
That match ended with Argentina winning 2–1, and Maradona later referred to his goal as the "hand of God."
Shilton noted that 40 years have passed, and he recently met with Argentine footballers during the filming of a documentary.
They treated me very well. And I think it’s probably time to put my grievances to rest. Football is a wonderful sport; it unites nations and people.
Recall that in the 51st minute of the match, Maradona scored with his hand, but the referee allowed the goal. "The ball was scored partly by the hand of God, partly by the head of Maradona," Maradona explained his action at the time. Back then, referees made decisions without video replays. The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system was officially incorporated into football rules only in 2018.
In 1986, Argentina became the world champion, defeating West Germany in the final. The tournament's best player, Diego Maradona, passed away on November 25, 2020.
