On Wednesday, the highest June temperature ever recorded in southern Britain was 35.7 °C, reports BBC.

The temperature in Charlwood, Surrey, rose to 35.7 °C, surpassing the previous June temperature record for the UK set in 1976, which was 35.6 °C.

These are the highest readings for the first month of summer since official records began, which are believed to have been kept since 1884.

In some parts of England and Wales, the 'red' level warning for extreme heat has been extended. On Wednesday, hundreds of educational institutions in the UK canceled classes or switched to a reduced schedule due to the high temperatures.

Due to the heat, there are also ongoing disruptions to train services in the UK. Equipment is failing due to the high temperatures, so train speeds have to be reduced for safety reasons.

It was hot in France too

On Tuesday, June 23, it became the hottest day in France in 79 years, since systematic nationwide observations began. Maximum temperatures in the country reached 44 °C.

Due to the extreme heat, at least 18 deaths have been recorded.
