The story developed after a conflict between the alleged mistresses.
Peruvian bishop Ciro Quispe López has submitted his resignation to Pope Leo XIV after the Vatican completed an investigation revealing his secret relationships with several women simultaneously, reports Oddity Central.
The 51-year-old clergyman, who led a diocese in Peru, is suspected of having up to 17 mistresses. Despite denying the allegations and claiming a "slanderous campaign by dark forces," López has resigned nearly two decades before the mandatory retirement age for Catholic bishops.
As reported by the media, the story developed after a conflict between the bishop's alleged mistresses. One of them, a nun, out of jealousy, disclosed information about his relationships to another woman, leading to a public scandal.
Despite the denials, the evidence presented — including photographs, correspondence, and witness testimonies — forced the clergyman to resign.
A fight between two jealous mistresses of the bishop also caused quite a stir, each believing she was his only passion. They were pitted against each other, also out of jealousy, by another mistress of the bishop — a nun.
Additionally, The Times reports that the Vatican was compelled to investigate suspicions of the bishop embezzling church funds: he allegedly took chairs belonging to the church and placed them in a restaurant chain, Patas Arriba, in which he has a stake.
Finally, the Aymara indigenous people complained to the Vatican, claiming that His Excellency allegedly misappropriated funds allocated by the UN for projects supporting this indigenous group in Peru. Paola Ugas reported that the bishop returned the money, which was quite unexpected. However, she links this to the fact that the indigenous people threatened the bishop with lynching, and the Aymara are known for keeping their word.
