On Thursday, a shipment of 30,000 tons of Russian mineral fertilizers was sent from Latvia to Bangladesh, which is a donation under the initiative of the UN World Food Programme, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) reported.
This is already the fifth shipment of mineral fertilizers of Russian origin, frozen on the territory of Latvia and owned by companies subject to European Union (EU) sanctions.
The previous four batches — a total of 130,000 tons — were sent in 2023 and 2024 to Kenya, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, and Sri Lanka.
The Latvian government decided in December 2022 to respond to the UN's request for assistance in mitigating the negative consequences of Russia's war against Ukraine and to help address the food crisis in countries in Africa, Latin America, and South Asia.
The Cabinet of Ministers of Latvia has resolved to support the transfer of fertilizers owned by companies under EU sanctions as a donation through the UN World Food Programme.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that Latvia continues to provide assistance to countries affected by the food crisis.
The UN World Food Programme is organizing the export of the remaining batches of sanctioned mineral fertilizers from Latvia to send them to those states where such products are particularly needed.
