According to authorities, an air alert has been declared in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and several regions of Ukraine due to the threat of missile strikes, and explosions have been heard. It is -20 degrees Celsius in Kyiv and -22 in Kharkiv.
The Russian army launched a massive combined strike on several regions of Ukraine on the night of Tuesday, February 3, with explosions reported. This was announced on Telegram by the Air Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the authorities of Kyiv and Kharkiv. During the Russian strikes, it was -20 degrees Celsius in Kyiv and -22 in Kharkiv, reports DW.
"The Russians decided to strike Kyiv again in the severe frost. Currently, reports are coming in about damage to several residential high-rise buildings and an educational institution in the Dnipro district as a result of the attack," wrote the head of the Kyiv regional military administration, Timur Tkachенко, on social media around 01:30 local time. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported hits in non-residential buildings in the Darnytskyi district of the capital and a fire in a kindergarten building in the Dnipro district.
Kyiv: one injured, damaged homes and vehicles
After a while, the head of the Kyiv OVA reported on the consequences of the attack. According to him, a man was injured in the Darnytskyi district, and doctors provided assistance on the spot. In the same area, a 25-story and a 5-story building were damaged, a residential 5-story building was damaged in the Dnipro district, and fragments of "enemy objects in open territory" were found in two locations, Tkachенко added. Additionally, in the Pechersk district of Kyiv, a gas station building and parked cars were damaged, and in the Shevchenkivskyi district, preliminary data indicates a 22-story residential building was affected, he noted.
Kharkiv region: four injured
Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported several strikes by Russia on the city with ballistic missiles, with two hits recorded in the Slobidskyi district. In turn, the head of the Kharkiv OVA, Oleg Synegubov, reported several attacks using strike drones and guided aerial bombs in the region. "Two people were injured in Kharkiv as a result of enemy shelling. A 27-year-old and a 58-year-old man are currently receiving medical assistance," he wrote on his Telegram channel, adding that two more people were injured in the city of Derhachi.
The strikes are "targeted at energy infrastructure," emphasized Terekhov. Authorities will have to "make difficult decisions," specifically, "drain the heat carrier in the heating system of 820 houses supplied by one of the largest heat and power plants," the mayor explained. "An unprecedented attack on critical infrastructure leaves no other option. Our specialists see no other way out," he added. According to the mayor, a 101 "Invincibility Point" will operate around the clock in the city, where people can warm up and charge their devices. If necessary, authorities will deploy additional heating points, he assured.
Russia has ended the "energy truce"
Russia resumed strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure last night, thus breaking the "energy truce" declared four days earlier. On the night of February 2, Russian troops attacked energy facilities in the Kharkiv, Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, and Cherkasy regions, stated the First Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine, Artem Nekrasov.
According to the Ministry of Energy, restoration work at the affected energy facilities continues, but a power deficit remains in Kyiv and the Kyiv region. Additionally, due to adverse weather conditions, more than 160 settlements in the Odesa, Mykolaiv, and Kirovohrad regions remain without electricity.
The Deputy Minister also reported a targeted attack on energy sector workers in the Dnipropetrovsk region, where Russians struck a service bus of one of the energy enterprises near the "Ternivska" mine with drones the day before. As a result, 16 mine workers were killed, and another 14 were injured. On the afternoon of February 2, Russians struck the same enterprise a second time, damaging administrative buildings, said the energy company DTEK.
