The accident occurred around 08:15 at a railway crossing in Buggenhout — a locality between Antwerp and Brussels. "The train had already begun to slow down. The driver activated the emergency brake, but could not prevent the collision," railway representatives reported.
There are also reports of material damage at the railway crossing. "But right now, that is the least of our concerns. Our thoughts are with the victims of this tragedy, their families, and loved ones," the service representatives noted.
As reported by VRT Nieuws, numerous emergency services are working at the scene.
There were about one hundred people on the train. All of them were evacuated and accommodated in the fire station.
Currently, rail services are disrupted.
