The installation of applications on Android will change significantly from next year: what you need to know

Google's new rules will significantly limit the downloading of applications and APK files from third-party sources.

Starting next year, Android will introduce strict developer verification – with identity checks and personal data confirmation. Previously, such verification was only applied in Google Play, but now it will be at the system level. Google has detailed how the new system will work.

Verification will be provided by a new tool called Android Developer Verifier, which will become a mandatory part of all devices with pre-installed Google services, including those running older versions of Android.

It is impossible to store a constantly updated database of millions of registered applications on the device, so in some cases, the smartphone may require a network connection for verification. However, a cache of the most popular applications will be stored on the device, allowing them to be installed offline.

As previously known, there will be two types of accounts for developers. A free account for students and enthusiasts, but with a limit on the number of installations. The paid option will cost $25 and will allow applications to be distributed without restrictions, similar to registration in Google Play.

Developer confirmation will be carried out through a cryptographic signature: they must prove that they own the key with which the application is signed. If a developer is found to be distributing malware, the installation of their software will be blocked.

Google emphasizes that the new verification system will not affect the content of applications and is aimed solely at protecting users from malware. The list of verified developers will not be public, but the data will be stored by the company and may be provided upon request from authorities.

Testing of the program will start in October 2025, and it will initially be available only by invitation. It will be launched for all developers in March 2026, and in September 2026, it will be mandatory for Brazil, Indonesia, Thailand, and Singapore.

Recall that last year Apple, under pressure from the EU, allowed the installation of third-party applications on iOS devices. Currently, this option is available to users in 27 countries that are part of the European Union, but it will eventually be rolled out worldwide.

Meanwhile, a new most downloaded mobile application has emerged, surpassing even ChatGPT and Google Gemini. This is an AI-powered TikTok alternative for creating short videos from OpenAI.
