The London club of the English Premier League, Arsenal, secured its place in the UEFA Champions League final on Tuesday, where it last played 20 years ago, reports LETA.
In the second leg of the semifinal, Mikel Arteta's team defeated Atletico Madrid at home with a score of 1-0 (1-0) and won on aggregate 2-1.
The Londoners took the lead in the final minute of the first half when Bukayo Saka sent the ball into the net. Victor Djoekereš intensified the attack, freeing himself from the opponent's defenders and crossing from the right flank along the goal. After a deflection, the ball ended up with Leandro Trossard, whose shot was saved by Jan Oblak, but Saka was the first to follow up.
Closer to the middle of the second half, the Gunners had an excellent opportunity to strengthen their advantage — after a pass from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from the left flank, Djoekereš sent the ball just over the goal with a volley.
Atletico's head coach Diego Simeone used all five substitutions in two stages — first making a triple substitution in the 57th minute, and then making two more nine minutes later.
The first match between the teams ended in a draw — 1-1.
In 2006, in the final held in Paris, Arsenal lost to Barcelona with a score of 1-2.
The second finalist will be determined on Wednesday. In the first semifinal match, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) won, defeating Bayern Munich at home with a score of 5-4.
The tournament final will take place on May 30 in Budapest.
Last season, in the Champions League final in Munich, PSG crushed Inter Milan with a score of 5-0.
