The program gives teenagers a chance to earn and gain their first experience — interest in it is at a record high this year.
Starting from May 6, students in Latvia can apply for summer employment. Young people aged 15 to 20 who are studying in schools or vocational colleges can participate. Work can last from one to two months.
The program is organized by the State Employment Agency. They note that this is an opportunity to gain initial skills and better understand how work is organized — this can also influence career choices.
This year, the response is particularly high: 938 employers have submitted applications, and about 15,600 students plan to participate.
Most job offers are in the service sector — as salespeople, waiters, assistants, or in the kitchen. However, there are also more qualified vacancies, for example, in IT, logistics, and finance.
For a full month, they promise no less than the minimum wage — 780 euros before taxes. The state covers part of the expenses, while the rest is borne by the employer.
The summer employment program has been in operation in Latvia for over 20 years — since 2004.
