On Tuesday morning, four vehicles were involved in a traffic accident near Jelgava.
Two of them, which were involved in the head-on collision, were severely damaged. Two people were injured in the accident. For several hours, traffic towards Riga was blocked near the town of Raubeni, but it was restored around noon, reports the show Degpunktā (TV3).
Firefighters stood in front of four mangled cars involved in the collision. Three of them were heading towards Riga, while the Audi was traveling towards Jelgava.
An eyewitness reported that several cars were moving in the direction of Jelgava. Suddenly, the Audi veered out of the column of cars into the oncoming lane, where it collided with a Hyundai coming in the opposite direction.
The driver may have felt unwell, which led to the reckless maneuver. The man was sober behind the wheel. The most severe impact was on the Hyundai, as immediately after the head-on collision, a trailer crashed into the rear of the vehicle — the driver of the minibus following behind did not have time to react and avoid the accident.
“Before that moment, I thought I was going to ‘go up’ because the speed was such, and the impact… But then, when I realized that I was still alive and, thank God, God was nearby, I immediately tried to get out of the car to make sure my father was okay,” said the passenger of the Hyundai.
The man's father sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital. He also suffered a leg injury, but he will decide later if he needs further medical consultation. Approximately four hours later, traffic on the Jelgava highway was restored in both lanes. Law enforcement agencies will further investigate the causes of the accident.
