"In this conservative government, there are many forces that are similar in some sense," political scientist Lelde Metla-Rozentale (University of Stradina) assesses the direction of the current Cabinet of Ministers in an interview with the newspaper Diena.
"And there is a question, for example, whether the National Alliance will manage to show how they differ from the 'United List' or the New Conservative Party, which are also national-conservative."
"Unity is still trying to internally understand what to do next," the expert believes. "And there is definitely a faction inside that wants to maintain the continuity of the Silinie era. And there are those who would like some kind of new beginning."
The party now controls the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Communications. "It is very important to show some successes in both of these areas, as this may influence the choice of pragmatic voters: 'Ah, the 'Progressives' are those who only support these ideas, but look, here is 'Unity', which can turn these ideas into reality and implement them.'"
"For us to talk about a genuine change of system in Latvia, we need to overthrow everyone who has been in power until now," the analyst states unexpectedly sharply. "I am thinking here about Alvis Hermanis ('We are Changing the Rules'), and such political forces as 'Latvia First' and to some extent also 'Sovereign Power' – although to a lesser extent, as it is more oriented towards the Russian-speaking voter."
