The rise in smuggling and the increase in violations of anti-Russian sanctions have been linked by the new head of Latvia's Ministry of Interior, Janis Dombrova, to the actions of former Finance Minister Arvils Asheradens.

"At a time when violations of smuggling and sanctions regimes are increasing, the former finance minister decided to cut operational resources and positions available for the tax and customs police," states the problem and names the culprits, Interior Minister Dombrova.

He also promises to correct the mistakes made by Asheradens: "It will not be possible to solve all the problems that have arisen over a long period of time, but we will be able to address some issues in a few months."

After the resignation of the Silini government, where Asheradens held the position of Minister of Finance, he did not disappear – he currently holds the position in the Saeima Commission on Economic Affairs, Agricultural Policy, Environment, and Regional Development.

It should be noted that Dombrova represents the National Union, while Asheradens represents the New Unity party. Both political forces have long and consistently disliked each other. And during the election period, the persistent animosity has only intensified.
