The volume of railway freight transportation in Latvia for the first five months of this year decreased by 18.5% compared to the first five months of 2025 and amounted to 3.067 million tons, according to data from the Ministry of Transport.
In particular, the volume of international transportation for the first five months of this year amounted to 2.4 million tons, which is 23% less than in the corresponding period last year, while the volume of domestic transportation increased by 3.1% to 667,000 tons.
The volume of transit cargo for the first five months of 2026 amounted to 2.02 million tons, which is 17.4% less than in the first five months of 2025.
This includes the volume of railway transit cargo through ports, which amounted to 1.691 million tons, a decrease of 16.9% compared to the first five months of 2025, while land transit through the territory of Latvia amounted to 329,000 tons, which is 19.8% less.
Data also indicates that export transportation for the first five months of this year amounted to 255,000 tons, which is 2.1 times less than in the first five months of 2025, while import transportation amounted to 1.816 million tons, which is 16.8% less.
It has already been reported that the volume of railway freight transportation in Latvia in 2025 decreased by 17.6% compared to 2024 and amounted to 9.454 million tons.
