Among the candidates for the position of special envoy of Europe for peace negotiations on Ukraine with Russia are former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Finnish President Alexander Stubbs, and former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, Politico reports citing sources. The enthusiasm of the acting Prime Minister of Latvia remained unutilized.
Regarding Merkel, many in Europe believe that "her past unsuccessful attempts at mediation are sufficient for disqualification." Stubbs "will require broad support from the EU, and Finland's NATO membership may reduce its attractiveness to Moscow." At the same time, Draghi "is highly respected in Europe and is seen as a figure who is neither overly hawkish nor sympathetic to the Kremlin." The head of EU diplomacy Kaja Kallas also proposed her candidacy, but, as the publication writes, "she excluded herself from this role" with her "tough anti-Russian stance." As reported by bb.lv, in February, while serving as the Prime Minister of Latvia, Evika Silina unexpectedly stated that she wanted to meet with Putin. "Yes, we (the EU) really need an envoy. Probably, the question is who that will be. And I think we have many options. I am ready to go if needed," Silina stated, but her enthusiasm was not taken seriously by anyone. It should be noted that Putin proposed appointing Gerhard Schröder, but this was immediately rejected by the EU.
