Hands off the money! Coalition partners roughly dismissed the 'Green Farmers'

The ruling party and 'Progressives' do not want to open a 'dangerous' discussion before the elections.

Today at the coalition council, there were no sensational developments - as could be predicted, 'New Unity' and 'Progressives' rejected even a very mild proposal from the 'Green Farmers' regarding savings in the second pension level. Specifically, the 'Green Farmers' suggested allowing Latvians to use their savings in the second pension level for treatment in case of a serious illness.

Why were the partners against it? The main argument was that before the elections, it is not advisable to engage in populism and open discussions on such a sensitive topic.

The partners also believe that pension funds should not be mixed with the provision of medical services - pension savings are meant to ensure social guarantees and a certain level of comfort for individuals in old age. Issues of medical assistance should be addressed through increasing the healthcare budget and after the elections.

Honestly, these arguments do not sound very convincing, especially considering that the right to choose savings is proposed to be granted to seriously ill individuals who may not live to retirement age.

In any case, the 'Green Farmers' did not receive support from their coalition partners, and now the question arises: what will the 'Green Farmers' actually do? Will they again accept another defeat or will they push their proposals to the Saeima in hopes of gaining support from the opposition?
