“We will not cooperate in a coalition with populists, pro-Russian forces, and Šlesers...”

The chairman of the parliamentary faction of "New Unity" spoke about who will be the leader of this political force in the upcoming elections.

As the hour X approaches, that is, the start of the official election campaign, rumors are intensifying that there is growing skepticism within "New Unity" regarding the possible leader of the election list - Evika Silina. However, the head of the parliamentary faction of "New Unity" and the chairman of the board of the Unity party, Edmunds Jurēvics, denied these rumors in an interview with "Diena." “I can say clearly and unequivocally, to put this topic to rest — internal measurements show that the highest support among the core electorate of 'New Unity' is for Prime Minister Evika Silina. We are currently stable in second place and are competing with 'Latvia First' (LPV), and the highest rating and personal approval ratings are from those voters who support us, namely Evika Silina,” Jurēvics stated to "Diena." He also commented on the situation with the ratings of political forces.

"Firstly, I really agree that everything that has happened in recent months within the coalition, where the New Conservative Party (JKP) and the Progressives exchange exalted, sometimes justified or less justified 'courtesies' daily, creates a sense of instability — this certainly does not create any positive mood in society regarding the coalition's overall ability to work, and this must be acknowledged. Secondly, what we feel in the political environment as a whole — we, including those parties that are more pragmatic, have entered into a very sharp struggle for the voter who believes that 'everything is bad' and 'Latvia is a failed state.' This general negative background certainly leaves an imprint on the leading party - 'New Unity'...

Let’s not deny that over these months there have been three major shocks that have provoked public reaction. There was the scandal surrounding IT procurement, there was a difficult winter with high heating bills, and there was the entire airBaltic process, which has drawn justified public attention with questions we had to address. And in the end, society looks at us regarding how we will resolve all these issues. All these circumstances have influenced society," the politician explained.

The leader of the parliamentary faction of "New Unity," "traditionally," outlined the red lines - naming the parties with which "New Unity" does not intend to work in power after the elections: "We have said our piece — we will not cooperate in a coalition with populists, pro-Russian forces, and Šlesers, but part of the United List, the National Alliance, and other political forces clearly stated this after the elections to the Riga City Council. Therefore, before voters go to the polls, they should receive an honest answer about who considers it possible to cooperate with which political forces. I believe that, looking at the current composition of the Saeima, we are now ready to cooperate both with members of the current coalition and primarily with state-minded forces - the United List and the National Alliance."
