Saint George the Victorious. What Orthodox Christians in Latvia can and cannot do on May 6

On May 6, 2026, the saint who became famous for both his military feats and gentle piety — Saint George the Victorious — is remembered.

He received this nickname for being able to spiritually defeat his tormentors and show an example of true spiritual courage. In the people, this day is called George the Spring or Yuriev Day.

It is on this one day of the year that in ancient times, peasants could switch from one master to another at their own will. This day also celebrates the Mid-Pentecost — it is halfway from Easter to Pentecost.

What is remembered in the Church on May 6, 2026

Mid-Pentecost. This is a twelfth Lord's feast. It is celebrated 25 days after Easter. It is halfway between Easter and Pentecost (Trinity). This is one of the ancient Christian holidays. The earliest mentions of it date back to the 5th century. Among liturgical monuments, the earliest containing a rubric dedicated to the feast is the Jerusalem Lectionary of the 7th–8th centuries, preserved in the Georgian translation.

Saint George the Victorious. George lived in the 3rd century. He was born into a noble family in the city of Cappadocia. His father, named Gerontius, was a pagan, while his mother, named Polychronia, was a Christian. His mother raised him in her faith, and George grew up deeply believing. When George was still a little boy, he advised his fever-stricken father to pray to Christ. Then Gerontius was healed and subsequently accepted Christianity. Moreover, he accepted a martyr's death in the name of the new faith when his son was only 10 years old. The widow with the child moved to Palestine, from where she was originally from and where her personal wealthy land holdings were located.

As the boy grew up, he joined the military service. Among other warriors, he stood out for his bravery, intelligence, strength, and beauty. He quickly rose through the ranks and soon reached the rank of commander of a thousand, and then became the favorite of Emperor Diocletian. However, he fanatically adhered to pagan beliefs, trying by all means to revive its waning power in the Roman Empire, and fought against Christianity, entering history as perhaps the most cruel persecutor of faith.

Once, George was present at a trial where Christians were sentenced to death for their faith. He realized that he could no longer remain silent. Then he distributed his possessions to the poor, freed his slaves, put all his affairs in order, and appeared before the emperor. Publicly declaring himself a Christian, he delivered a very convincing speech in defense of those who had previously been sentenced to death by the emperor. Diocletian was furious, tried to persuade his former favorite, and then ordered him to be thrown into prison and tortured. But, enduring the torments, George bravely bore his suffering and praised God. Seeing his steadfastness, the emperor ordered the warrior's head to be cut off. Thus, he departed to Christ in 303. His relics were placed in the Palestinian city of Lydda in the temple named after him, while his head was kept in a temple dedicated to him in Rome.
