Repairs of the Cable-Stayed Bridge in Riga: Authorities Fear Traffic Collapse

The issue of repairing the Cable-Stayed Bridge raises the greatest concerns regarding traffic organization, said Riga Vice Mayor Maris Sprindžuks in an interview with the program "900 seconds" on TV3, LETA reports.

“If we recall what happened to traffic during the repairs of the Brasas Bridge, the overpass on Altonavas Street, and Dzelzavas, all these cases caused huge inconveniences,” he noted.

Sprindžuks emphasized that the Riga City Council needs to develop a "Plan B" in a timely manner. "What will happen to public transport, how to adapt private cars," he said, adding that it is important for the council to create predictable rules. He also suggested that residents might change their habits and use public transport more often.

The vice mayor promised that the municipality would consider how to ensure that public transport continues to operate smoothly.

As reported, the Riga City Council plans to borrow up to 84.46 million euros for the repairs of the Cable-Stayed Bridge. This includes up to 6.7 million euros needed in 2026, up to 42 million euros in 2027, and up to 35.76 million euros in 2028.

The consortium "Vanšu tilts" won the competition for the reconstruction of the Cable-Stayed Bridge, offering to carry out the work for 69.8 million euros excluding VAT, according to information in the Electronic Procurement System. The consortium includes LLC "Hanza Construction Group," LLC "Tilts," and LLC "Baltijas mākslīgo būvju projektēšanas birojs 'Vektors T'".

The total length of the Cable-Stayed Bridge is 593.6 meters, and the height of the main pylon reaches 108.7 meters. The project includes updating the asphalt surface of the roadway, creating a separated pedestrian zone and cycling infrastructure. The width of the sidewalks will be 1.7 meters on one side and 1.9 meters on the other. The bridge railings will be restored to their previous height of 1.3 meters.

The replacement of the cables is also planned, with a total weight of 385.5 tons. New protective sheaths for the existing and new cables with a total length of 3084 meters will be installed, ensuring durability and protection from environmental impact.

The reconstruction of the Cable-Stayed Bridge will be implemented using the "design and build" method, which stipulates that one contractor performs both the design development and construction work, ensuring a unified approach, consistency, and accountability throughout the contract period.

There are a total of 145 bridges, overpasses, and pedestrian tunnels in Riga. Some of them have already served their time, as evidenced by their appearance and technical condition.
