In the ruling circles of Germany, a boycott of the 2026 World Cup is not ruled out in the event of a forceful annexation of Greenland by the United States.
This was stated by the foreign policy representative of the CDU/CSU faction, a close ally of Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Jürgen Hardt, as reported by Die Welt.
"Refusing to participate in the tournament can only be seen as a last resort to make President Trump reconsider the Greenland issue," Hardt said.
At the same time, Hardt expressed hope that a common solution could be found within NATO to avoid escalating the conflict.
The 2026 World Cup will take place from June 11 to July 19 in 16 cities across the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
