The opposition will try to 'get back' for the defeat in the 'game' around the Istanbul Convention.
There is no doubt: in the battle over the Istanbul Convention, its political supporters in the form of the 'New Unity' and 'Progressives' won. The president, who joined them, proposed a 'compromise' - to no longer consider the bill on exiting the Istanbul Convention in this Saeima session. The majority of the parliament agreed to this. Does this mean that the issue of the convention is closed for the next almost year (until the new Saeima convenes)?
Of course not! Firstly, the topic of the convention will now become an integral part of the election campaign. Secondly, the right-wing opposition is preparing a counterattack - amendments to the Constitution will be proposed in parliament, which plan to clearly state that only two genders are recognized in Latvia - male and female. It cannot be ruled out that opposition deputies may even initiate a referendum on these constitutional changes.
The opposition, with the support of the coalition partners 'Green Farmers', will try to expedite the consideration of the presidential bill aimed at facilitating the procedure for launching the referendum. It is clear that gathering more than 154,000 voter signatures at the first stage is practically impossible.
In general, the ideological confrontation in the Saeima is just beginning! The Istanbul Convention simply served as a trigger in this case.
