The parliamentary committee continued its squabble over the bill on exiting the Istanbul Convention
Today, the Saeima Foreign Affairs Committee began reviewing amendments submitted by opponents of the bill on exiting the Istanbul Convention - deputies from 'New Unity'. A total of 17 amendments were submitted. Their authors provided detailed justifications for their positions. However, due to the large agenda of the Saeima's work, the deputies agreed that today's committee meeting would last just over an hour. However, tomorrow the parliamentarians will work 'until the end', meaning until all amendments submitted to this bill are reviewed. The discussion of the amendments took place in a very tense atmosphere. As a result, the head of the committee, Inara Murniece (National Alliance), could not hold back and delivered an emotional speech, expressing bitterness and dissatisfaction that supporters of exiting the Istanbul Convention are perceived by opponents as enemies. Moreover, they are trying to accuse 60 percent of the Saeima deputies of acting in the interests of Russia, guided by Russian narratives. 'The National Alliance stated at the stage of ratification of the Istanbul Convention that it opposes ratification. That is, we have not changed our position,' Ms. Murniece explained.
In any case, the committee did not manage to review the majority of the amendments today and will try to do so tomorrow. The committee simply will not have any other time, as the parliament is supposed to adopt the bill in its final reading on Thursday! However, it cannot be ruled out that opponents of exiting the Istanbul Convention will try to prolong the plenary session and... the voting may not take place. In that case, the voting will only occur a week later.
