Despite the approaching calendar summer, the water in most rivers, lakes, and along the coast of Latvia remains quite cool. According to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre, on Friday morning, the highest water temperature was recorded in the Lielupe and Venta rivers — up to +17 degrees.
In the Daugava and Aiviekste rivers, the water has warmed up to about +15 degrees. In the Gauja, it is noticeably colder — from +13 to +15 degrees.
Sea bathers will have to be patient for now. The water temperature in the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga is only +10...+14 degrees, which is significantly lower than the air temperature.
Meteorologists also note that the low-water period continues on most rivers — the water level is changing slightly. At the same time, vegetation is actively developing in the water bodies. Aquatic plants have already grown along the riverbanks, and in some places, they have almost completely filled the beds of small watercourses.
This weekend, warming is expected in Latvia, and in many areas, the air temperature will exceed +20 degrees. However, the water is warming up significantly slower, so the swimming season remains more for the most hardened vacationers.
