Today in Latgale, the search for the second drone, which entered Latvian airspace from Russia yesterday and fell, will resume, Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis said in an interview with Latvian Television (LTV) program "Morning Panorama."
On Thursday evening, the National Armed Forces (NAF) suspended the search for the second drone that fell in Latgale, but at the same time believe that the drone remains explosive.
This morning, in a telephone interview with LTV, Kozlovskis stated that the search for the second drone will continue today. For the search operations, personnel will likely be regrouped and tactics adjusted based on the analysis of possible trajectories and the crash site of the aircraft.
Experience shows that locals are often the first to find the drone, so it is very important to remember that one should not approach such an object, but immediately report it to the emergency services by calling 112.
Kozlovskis added that the information provided by residents about drone activity entering Latvian airspace was very helpful for the services. For example, on Thursday, one of the drones that reached Rēzekne and then flew towards the border was actually tracked through calls from residents, the minister acknowledged.
As reported, early Thursday morning, several unmanned aerial vehicles entered Latvian airspace from Russia, of which at least one fell in Rēzekne, damaging a fuel storage facility. It is believed that another drone may have fallen in a more remote location, while another drone left Latvian airspace.
People who were in the vicinity of Ludza, Balvi, and Rēzekne during the incident received a mobile alert about the threat in the airspace.
The NAF reminds: as long as Russian aggression continues in Ukraine, there is a possibility of repeated incidents where foreign unmanned aerial vehicles enter or approach Latvian airspace.
