On Friday, a smuggler of illegal migrants was detained in the Kraslava region, who used a vehicle with a duplicated license plate of the Latvian army, reported the State Border Guard.
The offender used a minibus with a fake license plate that corresponds to the number of a real vehicle of the Latvian army.
In the Skaistkalne municipality, border guards noticed a Volkswagen minibus being driven by a citizen of Estonia, with another citizen of Estonia nearby. During the inspection of the minibus, 11 individuals without valid travel documents, visas, or residence permits were found inside, who had previously illegally crossed the Belarus-Latvia border.
It was also established that the vehicle's license plate was fake and matched the number of a real vehicle of the Latvian army.
Criminal proceedings will be initiated against the citizens of Estonia, and the illegal border crossing by the 11 individuals was thwarted.
This year, the State Border Guard has initiated 89 criminal cases against 77 individuals for the illegal transportation of persons and/or providing them with the opportunity to illegally stay in Latvia.
