Early Thursday morning, several unmanned aerial vehicles entered the airspace of Latvia from Russia, two of which fell, reported the National Armed Forces (NAF), according to LETA.
Units of the National Armed Forces, the State Police, and the State Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) are working at the scene.
The SFRS informed the LETA agency that on Thursday night around 3:30, several calls were received at the emergency number 112 about a possible fire at a petroleum storage facility on Komunala Street in Rezekne. Upon arrival at the scene, firefighters confirmed that there was no open flame, but necessary measures were being taken to cool one tank.
At the request of the National Armed Forces, at 4:09, the SFRS sent out a warning via the mobile alert system in the Ludza and Balvi regions, and at 4:43 — in the Rezekne region.
Residents of Rezekne reported through various information exchange channels that they heard frightening sounds during the night, including the roar of engines in the sky and sounds resembling an airplane. There were also sounds similar to explosions and flashes of light.
The alleged explosion or fire, reported to the SFRS, occurred at a site in the city of Rezekne, near the railway and the "Maxima" store. Residents also shared videos on social media showing a flash of light above Rezekne and a sound characteristic of an explosion.
Shortly after 6 a.m., the SFRS reported that during the inspection of oil tanks using a thermal imager, no elevated temperatures were recorded in them.
As previously reported, after 4 a.m., a warning about a possible threat in the airspace was sent out via the mobile alert system in the Balvi, Ludza, and Rezekne regions.
According to information on the "112.lv" website, the National Armed Forces are informing residents of the relevant areas about a possible threat in the airspace of Latvia. Residents of the Balvi, Ludza, and Rezekne regions are urged to take shelter indoors, close windows and doors, and if they spot a low-flying, suspicious, or dangerous object, not to approach it and to call 112.
It has been promised that a separate announcement will be made when the threat has ended.
As reported, in recent months, residents of Latgale have already received similar warnings via the mobile alert system, likely related to the approach or entry of drones involved in the Russian-Ukrainian war into the airspace of Latvia.
The National Armed Forces, together with NATO allies, continuously monitor the airspace to ensure the ability to respond immediately to potential threats. The army has strengthened air defense capabilities on the eastern border by deploying additional units.
As long as Russian aggression against Ukraine continues, the recurrence of cases where foreign drones enter or approach the airspace of Latvia remains possible, the National Armed Forces acknowledge.
