Boil or settle? Rīga residents warned about water chlorination from May 11 to 15

In preparation for the summer season and to enhance the safety of the water supply networks, preventive disinfection of the water supply, or chlorination, is planned in Rīga from May 11 to 15.

Although the disinfection of the water supply poses no health threat, it is recommended to use boiled water for drinking and cooking during the process and for 24 hours afterward. For household needs, water can be safely used without boiling.

Water intended for pets, birds, decorative fish, and other animals should be allowed to settle before use. The same should be done with water for watering houseplants.

The disinfection of the water supply will begin on May 11 at 00:00 simultaneously at all pumping stations of the Rīgas ūdens water supply company. The disinfectant will be evenly distributed throughout the city’s water supply network.

During these works, tap water may acquire an unpleasant smell and a slight taste of chlorine. However, in the amounts used for disinfection, this substance is not harmful or dangerous to health. Rīgas ūdens will continuously monitor the situation and control the concentration of chlorine in the water.

Preventive disinfection of water supply networks is desirable twice a year, but not less than once every two years. As noted by the company’s specialists and experts from the World Health Organization, such treatment of drinking water is a priority and necessary to ensure its consistently high quality.

Rīgas ūdens plans to conduct disinfection of the water supply twice a year or more frequently if necessary. The second disinfection of the water supply networks this year is scheduled for the fall.
