A Record Number of Patients Recorded at the Children's Hospital in Riga – What Happened?

A record number of patients has sought help at the Emergency Medical Center (EMC) of the Children's Hospital in Riga. A significant portion of the children were admitted with injuries sustained during outdoor activities.

On Tuesday, 286 children sought help at the Emergency Medical Center (EMC) — the highest daily number of patients in recent years, the clinic reported to bb.lv.

More than 100 children were admitted to the emergency room in one day with bruises and fractures of arms, legs, back, and nose, as well as head injuries, the risk of which significantly increases when using micromobility devices without a helmet.

It is particularly concerning that head injuries are being recorded in children under three years old, for whom even seemingly minor falls can have serious consequences.

The chief physician of the Emergency Medical Center at the Children's Hospital, Dace Barkeviča, emphasizes: "It only takes one unfortunate fall for an injury to have lifelong consequences; however, a helmet is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect a child. We urge parents to provide children with appropriate and comfortable protective gear to ensure that riding a bicycle, scooter, roller skates, or electric scooter is as safe as possible."

In addition to injuries sustained while riding scooters and bicycles, the use of trampolines becomes a frequent cause of injuries during warm weather. Most often, arms, legs, and heads are affected, but in some cases, injuries can be severe and have long-term consequences.

The Children's Hospital urges parents, children, and teenagers not to treat safety rules as a formality, but as a crucial condition for maintaining health.
