The price of electricity in Latvia decreased by 23% in April. For a long time?

The average price of electricity in April compared to March decreased in the Latvian trading zone by 23% to €57.45 per megawatt-hour, reported JSC "Augstsprieguma tīkls" (AST).

In Estonia, the price of electricity decreased by 11.1% to €54.53 per megawatt-hour, while in Lithuania it fell by 28.9% to €58.32 per megawatt-hour.

Compared to April 2025, the price of electricity in Latvia this April was 26% lower.

AST notes that in April of this year, the average price of electricity in the Latvian trading zone continued to decline for the second consecutive month, reaching its lowest level since July of last year.

In two of the three Baltic-connected trading zones, average electricity prices were higher. In the fourth trading zone of Sweden, the price of electricity in April was €61.44 per megawatt-hour, in Poland it was €83.08 per megawatt-hour, and in Finland, the price of electricity rose by 78% compared to March to €49.49 per megawatt-hour.

At the same time as electricity prices fell, the number of trading intervals with negative electricity prices significantly increased. In April, negative prices were observed in all European trading zones. Latvia recorded 84 such 15-minute trading intervals with negative prices, which is 4.7 times more compared to March. Lithuania recorded 88 such intervals, while Estonia had 32.

Total electricity imports to the Baltic countries in April of this year continued to decline, decreasing by 30.4% compared to March. The reduction was due to a 40% decrease in imports from Finland and a 7.3% decrease from Poland, while imports from Sweden increased by 5.1%.

AST notes that changes in electricity prices directly affect only those consumers who receive electricity at market prices.
