Riga is overcrowded, while regions lack people: Zemessardze commander calls for enlistment

A new status of Zemessardze supporter (Zemessardzes atbalstītājs) has been introduced in Latvia, allowing those who cannot serve for various reasons to participate in the defense of the state.

At the same time, interest in service is growing, but especially in the regions, there is still a shortage of volunteers. In the program TV3 "900 seconds," Zemessardze commander Aivars Kriukovs explained the significance of the new regulation and the role of society in national defense.

Commenting on the amendments adopted by the Saeima, Kriukovs emphasized that the new status is not intended as an alternative to service, but rather as a complement to it.

"This is not a replacement for Zemessardze members — it is a strengthening of the Zemessardze structure. This is a call for society to participate in the defense of the state," he noted.

He added that this system is not a one-day project — its implementation will continue with the development of additional rules and practical solutions throughout Latvia.

The commander emphasized that participation can take many forms.

"Everyone has their role in the defense of the state, and everyone with their own knowledge can help in creating the system," Kriukovs said.

Practical skills — in logistics, transport, IT, as well as in technology development, such as in the development of drones and other solutions — can be particularly useful.

Interest in service in Zemessardze remains, but it is of a wave-like nature.

"It is wave-like — geopolitical events cause an influx of people, then activity decreases," Kriukovs noted.

According to him, the State Defense Service is also making a significant contribution by attracting new people.

However, the shortage of volunteers is particularly acute in the regions.

"I need many more Zemessardze members — especially in Vidzeme, Kurzeme, and Latgale. Riga is overcrowded, and in the regions, we are very much looking forward to new people," the commander emphasized.

Zemessardze is increasingly integrating into the professional military system and actively participating in exercises.

"We can no longer say that Zemessardze is just a volunteer organization. These are full-fledged soldiers," Kriukovs declared.

The latest technologies are also being adopted, including drones, autonomous systems, and even 3D printing solutions.

In conclusion, the commander emphasized that Zemessardze reflects society.

"This is a place where you not only learn but can also teach others. Zemessardze is a mirror of society," he said.
